Scott Newman with George Thorogood at Doubleday Park in Newark
The construction of Doubleday was financed by George Thorogood, a local rock music star and avid baseball fan and player.
The city of Newark bought Doubleday from George Thorogood in July 1986. It was later renamed in honor of Leroy C. Hill, who managed and maintained the baseball field. Leroy C. Hill (1918-2007) was a very active Newarker and WWII veteran who spread his love of baseball around his entire life. Currently, the 6-acre park serves as the home for Newark’s American Little League.
