Samuel L. Shipley was born November 14, 1929 in Marlborough, Massachusetts and died in Naples, Florida on December 28, 2015 following a short illness. Sam had vacationed in Naples for the past 20 years, and also had a northern residence near Newark, Delaware. Sam led a long and successful life imbued with passion, humor and loyalty. He was the founder and CEO of Shipley Associates, Inc., an advertising and public relations firm in Wilmington, Delaware, and a leader in the Democratic Party. His dedication to public service was unending. Over the years, he served on numerous boards, both public and private. He was the chairman of the Delaware Democratic Party and, in 1976, was the Democratic nominee for Congress. He also served as the Delaware Development Director in the administration of Governor Terry and was involved in several national campaigns, including Vice President Hubert Humphrey’s.

Sam will be deeply missed by his family and many friends; his wife of sixty years, Susan Shipley; his children, Jeffrey Shipley, Beth Shipley and Amy Shipley; his son-in-law, Daniel Ligon; and his grandchildren, Alexander Shipley, Claire Shipley, Lucy Ligon and Sydney Ligon. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Donations in Sam’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
