Sally V. Hawkins, who took over Wilmington’s WILM in 1972 following the death of her husband and developed it into a widely-honored all-news AM radio station, died on Thursday, according to a family member.

She took the reins at a time when few women were leaders in the fields of business or journalism. Her contributions to the local arts community and her service on a variety of boards won her many honors over the years. Organizations that benefited from Mrs. Hawkins’ involvement included Goldey-Beacom College, Girl Scouts of Chesapeake Bay, Christiana Care, the Grand Opera House, Delaware Port Authority and the Delaware Community Foundation.

It was estimated that WILM donated more than $100,000 annually in goods and services to a range of community organizations in the form of public service announcements and presentations.

The Hall of Fame of Delaware Women inducted Sally Hawkins as a member in 2009.

At one time, she was an airline stewardess before they were known as flight attendants.

Sally Hawkins was born in 1922. She was a native of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
