Hal Schiff, American Youth Jazz Band of Delaware
9/15/1999 – Hal Schiff, Founder of Brandywine Blazers passes on
Harold L Schiff, age 72, died of complications of Alzheimer’s Disease on September 14, 1999. He was a WWII veteran and was a professional musician. Hal was a music educator In the Brandywine School District from 1960 to his retirement in 1985 as supervisor of music. Hal was the founder of the Brandywine Blazers and the Concord Creators and brought them to the fame they still have today. He also founded the American Youth Jazz Band which consisted of high school students from all over the United States, which toured Europe every year. Hal will always be remembered as the major contributor to music education not only in the Wilmington area, but throughout the United States. Many of his students are now professional musicians and educators.
Hal is survived by his wife Lois: sons, David and Donald; daughters in-law, Bridget and Cynthia; 5 grandchildren, Michael, Brian, Allen, Bridget and Aaron; and 2 brothers and 2 sisters.
